About Ryan
Born in the Salt Lake City area, I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Utah in 1998 (thank you Philosophy scholarship!). My passion has always been Computer Graphics and Web Development. I remember the first time I saw a color image on a computer screen, on a small CRT, and I was hooked. In 9th grade I asked for a book on Pascal (I thought object-oriented programming was something completely different) and started learning how to create animated images in low-level assembly.
Though only getting a Bachelor's, I thrived in my graduate-level Computer Graphics class. One of my favorite projects at the time was The RaNDoM House Project. I rode the bus to college, almost 2 hours a day, just thinking about random houses and ray-traced trees. I studied math as a minor, though I've forgotten much of that. Someday I'll go back and re-learn it. I loved differential equations and physical simulations.
When diving into the workforce after college, I found myself still trying to work with graphics projects on the side. When I first discovered Corel Painter things took a turn. In 2005 I quit my job and started working on the original Bluevine Studios. It was going to be a business creating custom art from photographs, with the aim to automate as many steps as possible. The first step was about color.
Long story short, the business didn't pan out. I moved to the Boston area in 2007 and worked full-time at the wonderful audio technology company iZotope for almost 10 years.
Taking I hiatus and traveling, I found myself back thinking about color and being dissatisfied with my early attempts. Which brings us to today and Color Cosm.
Outside of computers, I enjoy photography, making art, camping, live music, and reading great books.
